From Ambition to Action: Supply Chain Decarbonisation in Food & Beverage

Food and beverage companies are under increasing pressure to show real progress on Scope 3 emissions - not just targets. In this 45-minute workshop, we’ll focus on what it actually takes to move from abition to measurable, credible action across complex agricultural supply chains.

The session will cover practical approaches to supplier data and traceability, effective supplier engagement, and how emerging frameworks, market-based instruments, and robust MRV systems can support scalable Scope 3 reductions.

We’ll also share examples of what’s working today, including learnings from the Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance.

A key focus will be fertilizer emissions - a major but often overlooked driver of agricultural impact:

  • 21% of agriculture’s emissions come from fertilizer manufacturing, making it a major driver of agricultural greenhouse gases.
  • 2.60 gigatonnes of CO₂e are emitted from fertilizer production each year, more than the aviation and shipping industries combined.
  • 2% of global energy is consumed by synthetic nitrogen fertilizer production, making it one of the most energy-intensive industrial processes.

There will be insights from how The Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance (LCFA) has successfully overseen the installation of nitrous oxide (N2O) capture technology at the Verdigris Nitric Acid plant in Oklahoma, a milestone project that, thanks to the collective action of our members, will avoid over 2.5 million metric tons of CO2e over the next five years.

Attendees will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of the biggest Scope 3 challenges in food and beverage today
  • Practical ways to trace and reduce emissions across agricultural supply chains
  • Insight into how to make credible, substantiated climate claims aligned with evolving guidance
